Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanical behavior of PEEK implants to Titanium implants when rigidly connected to tooth abutment using finite element analysis method.
Methodology: Virtual model of unilateral partially edentulous mandible (Kennedy class II) with missing right first and second molars was designed. Rehabilitation of missing area using a
zirconium bridge connecting second premolar tooth abutment to implant placed in the second molar area. Implant material assigned varied for the virtual model between PEEK and titanium, each undergone both vertical and oblique load application . Average von mises stresses, maximum first principle stresses, average resultant displacement and maximum equivalent strain were recorded for each component of either model (PEEK, titanium) in each simulation (vertical
load, oblique load).
Results: PEEK model showed decreased peri-implant bone stresses by 9% and 5.5% than titanium model under vertical and oblique loads respectively. PEEK implant body stresses decreased by 17% than that of titanium implant body under both vertical and oblique loads.
Stresses in bridgework of PEEK model increased by 9% and 72% than titanium under vertical and oblique loads respectively. Resultant displacement of tooth abutment increased by 25% and 36% in PEEK model compared to titanium model under vertical and oblique loads.
Conclusion: Use of PEEK dental implants in rigid tooth-implant connections decreased the periimplant bone stresses but increased the stresses within the prostheses as well as the displacement of abutment tooth than titanium implants.
