Abstract

Exploiting Sinai’s resources is one of the most important existing files because of its economic, strategic and political priority. The exploitation of Sinai’s resources necessitates facilitating the transportation process between the cities of Sinai and the rest of Egypt’s cities in the west of the Suez Canal. It should be linked with other parts of Egypt to facilitate transport from it through the Suez Canal as a significant part of Egypt’s transportation network. Freight and people transportation activities increases if the movement were easier, faster and more abundant. Based on such needs, the importance of the new tunnels through the Suez Canal appears to facilitate the transportation process to and from Sinai. This research aims at studying the effect of underground passageways across Suez Canal on the transportation activities .A map was made of the main roads in Sinai and the area west of the Suez Canal, with roads linking the cities concerned with the study of the transportation process. Cities located in west of the Suez Canal and others in Sinai were chosen to run the analysis. Through one of network analysis tools in the ArcGIS program is the best route, the travel time between the selected cities west of the Suez Canal to one of the selected cities in Sinai is calculated. The same tool is performed for all cities and the time of each trip is recorded. The new underground passageways are added to the map then repeat the steps again. Finally, recording the time of the trips again, and comparing the results between the two cases before and after the Underground passageways. The difference is an indication of the importance of these tunnels. Also, the study of the effect on cost is the basis for the feasibility study that is illustrated in this research. It depends on value of time for that is deduced from the utility function in the case of the lorry, the pick-up car, and the personal car. The study of the difference in cost depends mainly on the study of the time value extracted from the utility function. The estimated VOT values, from the collected time and cost data, are 4.26 LE/min, 3.11 LE/min and 1.67 LE/min; respectively. The estimated VOT values are 3.89 LE/min, 2.78 LE/min and 1.48 LE/min for lorry, pick-up car and personal car; respectively with a relative error of +8.4%, +11.8% and +11.3%. The average monetary costs of time saving for each trip are 2192, 668 and 48 L.E/trip that indicates the hopeful impact of new proposed passageways on the main freight activities transport across Suez Canal.
