Abstract

In the present study, the suitability of endophytic fungi as nano factories for selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) were investigated. 75 fungal isolates were recovered from the plant tissues and tested for their efficacy to biosynthesize SeNPs. Four promising species were found able to synthesis SeNPs with different characteristics and identified. These species were Aspergillus quadrilineatus, Aspergillus ochraceus, Aspergillus terreus, and Fusarium equiseti. The synthesized SeNPs were characterized by several techniques. Furthermore, the in vitro antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, and wound healing activities were evaluated. SeNPs synthesized by the four fungal species showed potent promising behavior against all the tested activities. In order to maximize the production process, different cultivation conditions were evaluated for enhanced production of SeNPs. Also, the use of gamma irradiation for improvement of SeNPs’ production was adopted. Various biochemical compounds present in the four selected endophytic fungal species extract were identified by GC-MS. Selenium–containing proteins were separated and detected by Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.
