Abstract

This study is a quasi experimental study, aimed to measure the effect of an educational program on infection control in pediatric emergency department.
Sample of thirty nurses was included in the study from Pediatric Emergency Department at Suez Canal University Hospitals and the study was carried out in the previously mentioned setting. The study involved three tools to assess nurses’ knowledge, practice, and attitude pre and post program implementation. The first tool was predesigned questionnaire to assess nurses’ characteristics and their knowledge about infection control measures. The second tool was observational checklists to assess nurses’ practice regarding infection control and the third tool was Likert’s type rating scale to assess nurses’ attitude regarding infection control practice in pediatric emergency department. These tools were used twice pre and post the program implementation. Guiding booklet was prepared by the researcher in an Arabic language according to nurses’ actual educational need. It can be concluded from the results of the study that the educational program was effective in improving nurses’ knowledge, attitude and practice in pediatric emergency department. The study recommends establishing a system to educate, monitor and evaluate the infection control practices of nurses in pediatric emergency department and emphasize its’ importance to prevent and minimize the transmission of infection.
