Abstract

For thousands of years medicinal plants have been used to treat health disorders, to add flavor and conserve food and to prevent diseases epidemics. The secondary metabolites produced by the plants are usually responsible for the biological characteristics. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest to rediscover medicinal plants as a source of potential drug candidate. World Health Organization estimates that about 80% of people rely almost exclusively on traditional medicine for their primary healthcare needs. Nature has bestowed our country with an enormous wealth of medicinal plants. Asteraceae (Compositae) is an advanced and botanically highly specialized family of mainly herbaceous plants. The species belonging to the Asteraceae family are characterized by their abundant biological activity. This activity can be attributed to the presence of flavonoids in the extract Therefore, the aim of our thesis was to investigate the biological activity of a medicinal plant Jasonia montanathat belongs to Family Asteraceae. Jasonia montana occurs in the Mediterranean and adjacent areas, including the Sinai Peninsula, popularly known as Haneida. The herb has a strong aromatic odor and is used in traditional medicine for diarrhea, stomachache, and chest diseases. The broad aim of this thesis was to conduct a phytochemical and biological investigation of Jasonia montana, family: Asteraceae. The choice of the plant was based a literature survey which indicated that Jasonia montana is abundant in phenolic compounds with potential medicinal values. The initial phase of this work focused on evaluation of cytotoxic activity of Jasonia montana crude extract
