This study aims at knowing the effect of the Egyptian Central Bank’s plan to develop and reshape the Egyptian banking system through a program that has been establishes, and still, to reach a complete banking system that copes with the continuous world developments. The study found out the ability of the Egyptian banking system to face crises, financial or political, and its ability to support the national economy and achieve sustainable development during these crises.
Therefore, in the introductory chapter I introduced the Egyptian banking system. The banking sector is considered one of the most important bases of the Egyptian economy nowadays. It contributes at supporting the Egyptian economy and the different economic sectors. This occurs through collecting local savings, attract foreign cash resources, and employing this money in financing investment projects, in the economic development, and finally in supporting the Egyptian national economy. Egypt is witnessing a process of continuous development in the banking sector to raise the level of its performance and develop its role in the national economy. The banking system in Egypt passed through many stages until act 194 in 2020 was issued to release the act of the central bank and the banking system and the many types of banks that were included that were not among the Egyptian banking sector.
This chapter shows the definition of banks, their beginning, functions, and different types in the first section. The second section deals with studying the development of the Egyptian banking system and elaborating its current shape.
In the first chapter, the researcher deals with the program of shaping the Egyptian banking system, the reshaping of banks, the world financial crisis 2007/2008, and reshaping the Indian banking system. It became obvious that the Egyptian banking system faced many crises beginning with the world financial crises 2007/2008, then the local events in 2011, and finally the consequences of the spread of Corona virus and the Ukrainian crises. However, the sector was able to deal with all of them and absorb their consequences due to the continuous initialization of the sector through building capital bases, supporting them continuously, maintaining cash levels with the wise management of the central bank, supervising banks, directing them continuously, and dealing with all the updates and events that may affect the sector. In addition to that, applying all necessary procedures early that can reduce the consequences; keep the strength and smoothness of the sector in order to reduce the negative effects caused by the crises, and to limit their reflection on the economic activities and the levels of the target growth. It is expected that the banking sector will remain strong and able to face crises and will continue supporting the different economic sectors. However, it is necessary to cope with the world developments, cause the necessary changes, and introduce the information technology and digital revolution as in the Indian banking sector.
Chapter two is entitled the role of regulatory authorities in keeping banking safety. It includes studying the general framework of banking regulation and the international agreements of banking regulation. It became obvious that banking regulation is a necessary aspect in the modern financial systems because it seeks seriously to observe the risks of credit to protect the money of depositors. Generally, its main function is to prevent the occurrence of credit risks in the banking system, to increase transparency and influence in the banking services, and to contribute in protecting the money of small depositors. Therefore, banking regulation became the second base in Basel’s agreement recently. It is represented in enhancing and strengthening supervisory activities on banks.
Finally, chapter three is entitled the Egyptian banking system and the economic activity. It deals with depicting the importance of the role of Egyptian banking system in supporting the national economy, achieving sustainable development and financial comprehensibility for banks, and its ability to support the national economy and growth rates. It became obvious that the banking sector is one of the most important and main sectors in the world economy that has great importance in economic activity, and which has a great status in the Egyptian economy. Nowadays, it became one of the supporters of economic development especially in the developing countries and uprising economies due to the modern and new banking products and services that it offers.
