Abstract

The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is one of the most infection-prone areas in the hospital. The laryngoscope is identified as a potential vector for cross-infection. Infection control policies covering laryngoscope blade and handle processing are outlined relative to procedures of a teaching hospital department. Inadequate disinfection or sterilization of laryngoscope may lead to the cross-transmission of diseases and pathogen transmission to patients. The continuous education of healthcare workers (HCW) is considered as one of the key components of infection control programs. All the healthcare personnel are equally responsible to prevent HAIs, but nurses are the most important front-line staff. They play a critical role in controlling infection that begins with early detection and surveillance technique. nursing staff should be adequately educated in the basic principles of infection control and should undergo continuous trainings to acquire up-to-date knowledge and skills. Aim: The study aims to evaluate nurses’knowledge and performance regarding infection control measures in processing of laryngoscope of NICU. Method: A quasi-experimental design was used one group (pre and post) was used to accomplish this study. Setting: This study was conducted at Mansoura Specialized Hospital at Mansoura city on a convenient sample of (35) nurses working in the NICU. Tools: three tools were used to collect data : - nurses’ demographic and occupational characteristics questionnaire, nurses’ knowledge about infection control measures toward laryngoscope processing and observational checklists of performance of infection control measures to evaluate skills. Results: It was indicated significant improvement in nurses’ overall knowledge and performance, The majority of the studied Sample statistical significant difference between before and after educational program as regard to total nurses’ knowledge and performance with P-value<0.001**. There was a significant correlation between nurses’ knowledge and performance of nurses’ pre educational training program. Conclusion: Educational training program regarding infection control measures in laryngoscope processing had a positive effect on the studied nurses’ knowledge and performance. Recommendation : Regular educational programs to keep nurses in neonatal intensive care units updated with the evidence based practices and carry interventions for reducing infection among children and health care workers.
