Abstract

This study was performed on 323 patients with COVID 19 infection, 124 CRD patients admitted to cardiothoracic Minia university hospital during the period from January 2021 to August 2021.
All the patients had been subjected to the following:
1) Full detailed history taking included (age, sex, smoking status, other special habits and chest symptoms).
2) General examination.
3) Local chest examination.
4) Investigation included:
• Routine investigations (CBC, ESR, INR & PC) to evaluate the patient general condition.
• Plain chest radiography and Computed tomography (CT) chest.
• Serum ferritin, D dimer, CRP and LDH.
We collected admission data 2 years 2018/2019 before the era of COVID-19 in chest, cardiology, cardiothoracic departments, numbers of PFTs and outpatient clinic visits then compared it with data after COVID 19 in 2020/2021.
Patients with COVID19 infection were compared with patients of chronic respiratory disease without COVID 19.
Patient with COVID-19 infection and CRD were compared with patients of COVID-19 without CRD.

The results showed that:
- There was marked decline in number of patients admitted to our hospital in chest, cardiology and cardiothoracic departments during the pandemic.
- There was reduction in PFTs, outpatient clinic visits, interventional bronchoscope, thoracoscope and sleep studies during the pandemic.
- It was found that most of COVID-19 patients were older age having multiple associated comorbidities.
- Diabetic and Hypertensive patients were more common in COVID-19 patients.
- It was found that the most frequent symptoms in patients with COVID-19 infection were fever present in74.3%, cough in 62.3%, generalized fatigue 61.6%, sore throat was present in 54.5%, generalized bone pain in 61.6%, abdominal pain in 31.6%, diarrhea in 15.5% and loss of taste &smell in 7.4%.
- Serum ferritin, LDH and CRP were higher in COVID19 patients.
- It was found that no significant difference as regarding prognosis between COVID 19 patients with CRD and COVID19 patients without CRD.
- Among patients with COVID19 and CRD, 16 (4.95%) patients had OSA, the hospital mortality of patients with OSA was 7 (43.8%) of patients.
- It was found that no significant difference as regarding lymphocytic count between COVID-19 with and without CRD but serum ferritin, D-dimer and LDH was significant higher in COVID-19 patients without CRD.
