Abstract Abstract This study examines the ideological (mis)representations of mental and psychological illnesses in three Egyptian films: Al-Milleonair -The Millionaire (1950), Khalli Balak men Aqlak - Watch for your mind (1985) and Assef ‘ala Al Azʿaj - Sorry for the Disturbance (2008). Film discourse is a powerful discourse which has the capacity to endorse and/or assign certain ideologies and stereotypes to the patients. These ideologies are absorbed and accepted by the audience and hence become a norm which define mental illness and the patients in the Egyptian society. A multimodal critical discourse analysis is the linguistic tool kit used to examine the indicative verbal and semiotic modes of meaning delivery in the selected films. The analysis of the verbal mode of meaning making in the three films is based on samples of the verbal interaction between the characters.i.e., dialogue. As for the semiotic mode of meaning delivery, it is examined based on some cinematic multimodal elements like: setting, body language, characters attire and cinematographic techniques. Power relations between the characters which affect the ideological representation are also highlighted is some scenes. The study shows that sometimes films misrepresent mental and psychological illness and the patients and creates an erroneous ideology about them. However, some other films could give a better account about mental illness and the patients and stimulate emotions of empathy and respect towards them instead of mockery and ridicule. |
