Abstract
During the two winter seasons of 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons, two field
experiments were conducted at the Experimental Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Saba
Basha, Ibees Region, Alexandria University, Alexandria Governorate, Egypt, to examine the
influence of weed control treatments and their combination on faba bean (Vicia faba L. cv.
Giza 716) growth, productivity, quality as well as associated weeds.
In both seasons, treatments were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design
(RCBD) with three replications.
Within the experimental unit, ten weed control treatments and their combination
treatments were randomly distributed as follows:
1. T1= Control (unweeded).
2. T2= Mechanical method (Hand hoeing twice).
3. T3= Stomp 50% at the rate of 3.6 L/ha as pre- emergency herbicide.
4. T4= Spray pre- emergency herbicide (Sencor 70% at the rate of 720 g/ha).
5. T5= Spray mix of pre- emergency herbicides (Stomp at the rate of 3.6 L/ha +
Sencor at the rate of 720 g/ha)
6. T6= Stomp 50% at the rate of 3.6 L/ha as pre- emergency herbicide + one hand
hoeing (25 DAS).
7. T7= Spray pre- emergency herbicide (Sencor 70% at the rate of 720 g/ha) + hand
hoeing one time at 25 DAS.
8. T8= Basagran 48% after 25 DAS at 1.2 L/ha as post- emergency herbicide .
9. T9= Stomp 50% at the rate of 3.6 L/ha as pre- emergency herbicide then Basagran
48% after 25 DAS at 1.2 L/ha as post- emergency herbicide .
10. T10= Sencor 70% at the rate of 720 g/ha as pre- emergency herbicide then Basagran
48% after 25 DAS at 1.2 L/ha as post- emergency herbicide .
The preceding crop was maize (Zea mays L.) in the two successive seasons. Each plot
consisted of 6 ridges, 3 meters in length, 60 cm width and 20 cm between hills (10.80 m2).
On October 20th and 25th in 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 seasons, respectively, faba bean seeds
were planted at a rate of 120 kg/ha.
The field experiment was plowed twice before sowing. With soil preparation and a
single calcium-Super Phosphate (15.5 % P2O5) was applied at a rate of 480 kg/ha, along with
potassium sulphate (48 % K2O) at a rate of 120 kg/ha. The inoculation solution for
Rhizobium comprises 10 cell bacteria per gramme of faba bean seed. N- fertilizer was applied
as urea fertilizer (46.5 % N) at rates of 48kg N/ha in one dosage before the initial irrigation.
Other agricultural practices for cultivating faba bean plants were applied, as recommended
by the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation.
