Abstract

Summary
Coronavirus -19 (COVID-19) is a global public health threat and has evolved to become a pandemic crisis around the world, which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome. In response to this serious situation. COVID-19 was declared as a public health emergency of international concern by the WHO on January 30 and called for collaborative efforts of all countries to prevent the rapid spread of COVID-19 .
Schools present a potential hazard for spread of COVID-19 infection and teachers play a crucial role in coping with the protective measures of COVID-19 and on following the preventive measures of this pandemic.
Adherence to the standardized protective measures in schools is highly dependent on the teachers’ knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding COVID-19. So this study aimed to assess the protective measures against COVID-19 among primary school teachers at Assiut City through descriptive research design applied in primary schools at Assiut City, including 14 schools selected by systematic random sample, sample size was 400 teachers.
Three tools were used in this study; the first tool was structured questionnaire which developed by the researcher, it consisted of two parts; the first part was concerned with personal characteristics of studied teachers, such as age, gender, marital status, place of residence, level of education, years of experience. The second part designated to assess teachers’ knowledge about the COVID-19 such as signs and symptoms, modes of transmission, incubation period, diagnosis, treatment .... etc.
The second tool designed to assess teachers’ attitude toward the protective measures of COVID-19, such as; reporting to the local health authority when detecting a case, hand washing before and after entering the class, cleaning and sterilizing the surfaces, wearing a mask.... etc.
The third tool: observational checklist which developed by the researcher to assess the practices of the studied teachers regarding protective measures of COVID-19 including: washing hands, using hand sanitizers, applying social distancing, use of mask. Data was collected in the period from 10th of October to the end of December, 2021.
The main results of the present study were as the following:
The study results cleared that 51.0% of studied teachers were < 40 years old, 64.0% were females, 51.5% of them had graduated from university education while 73.8% of them had not attend educational programs about COVID-19. It was illustrated that 57.8% of teachers hadn’t infected with COVID -19 and 52.3% of them had no family history of COVID-19.
Regarding teachers’ knowledge; it showed that 70.5 % of the studied teachers had poor score of knowledge. Concerning teachers’ attitude; it was found that 57.5 % of the studied teachers had a negative attitude toward COVID-19. With referral to teachers practice; it was cleared that 81.25 % of studied teachers had unsatisfactory practice regarding protective measures of COVID-19.
It was reported that there were statistically significant differences between the studied teachers’ score of knowledge with their type of school, age, years of experience, residence and family history of COVID-19, with P values = 0.000, 0.000, 0.000, 0.004 and 0.000 respectively. It was cleared that there were statistically significant differences between the studied teachers’ attitude with their type of school, age, marital status, years of experience and residence, with P values = 0.000, 0.008, 0.018, 0.000 and 0.000 respectively. Also, found there were statistically significant differences between the studied teachers’ practice with their type of school, age, educational level, marital status, years of experience and family history of COVID-19, with P values = 0.000, 0.001, 0.002, 0.012, 0.000 and 0.006 respectively.
• The study concluded that:
from the results of the present study it was concluded that less than three-quarters of the studied teachers had poor score of knowledge regarding COVID-19, more than half had negative attitude toward COVID-19. Majority of the studied teachers had unsatisfactory practices regarding protective measures of COVID-19. There were statistically significant differences between the studied teachers’ personal data and their score of knowledge, attitude and practices.
- According to the results of the current study, recommendations was that:
1. Health education should be provided by using posters, pictures and pamphlets about COVID-19 for teachers and other school personnel to facilitate acquiring the basic hygienic skills and other infection control measures.
2. Educational and training programs should be target schools’ teachers about COVID-19 protective measures.
3. Further researches on larger sample size should be performed for generalization of the study findings.
4. The community health nurse must activate their role in spreading the community awareness regarding standardized protective measures of COVID-19.
