المستخلص

The thesis will be done on two volumes, the first volume will comprise the full text elaborating the laboratory and theoretical studies done. In order to understand the environmental and geological conditions of the sites within the Mareotic region, I elaborate in the first Chapter, a brief explanation of the physical geography and geology of the region as well as the geomorphological features and variations of the lake size and water levels since antiquity. Developing then an assemblage of the archaeological researches and works established in the region since it became one of interest to the scholars and archaeologists and till today. After that, I talk briefly about the historical and economic activities in the region and their influence on the historical and economic developments of the city of Alexandria. And finally, the first chapter ends with the aim and objective of the study. The second Chapter consists of the main objective of the study which is the characterisation of the production(s) of each of the 17 Ptolemaic and Roman amphorae production workshops. This part of the study starts of by explaining the methodology applied since the extraction of the samples from the sites until obtaining the final results, after which comes an explanation of the methodology pursued for the characterisation of each individual VI site and then finally, the actual characterisation of the production(s) of each site. Besides the characterisation of the sites, through this chapter, I determine the chemical differences between the production(s) of the different workshops and hence differences between the same type of amphora (AE2, AE3 or AE4) produced on different workshops. I also deduce if the differences between the different workshops and their productions are related to: the different clay source (due to location of the site), or different fabrication technologies used through the different sites or both. The third and final Chapter in our study here includes the division of the region into 6 preliminary zones and characterising them. Zones within the region have been previously defined by the responsible archaeologist by taking into account the geological, topographical and archaeological aspect within grouping the sites in order to conduct this phase of the study of the region. Therefore, the characterisation of the zones was done through comparison of the groups obtained from each site within each zone (groups obtained from the characterisation of the individual sites) through statistical analyses and characterising the different productions within each zone. By combining the different groups within the sites of each zone, I characterise the production(s) of the different zones, and then validate or not the preliminary defined zones. After the characterisation of each of the fabricated preliminary zones and the calculation of the averages of the different productions within each zone, the final step of our study was comparing the averages as well as the minimum and maximum values obtained with respect to each element for all the production groups resulting from each zone in order to confirm or nullify the existence of the different preliminary zones defined and to extract the particular differences and similarities between them. Thus, during my study, 6 zones of productions have been defined within the Mareotic region, dating to the Early Roman and Hellenistic periods.
