Abstract

Beta thalassemia patients have major growth problems disturbances. Its pathogenesis is multifactorial. But the most important when patients are transfusion dependant with iron overloaded and increasing serum ferritin that accumulate in most of body organs affecting normal growth. Body mass index is one of the methods to assess underweight, healthy, overweight and obese children/patients. it is very vital to detect these derangements as early as possible to prevent the consequent impending hazards. And the same regarding other anthropometric measures. This study aimed to detect the nutritional health status of transfusion dependent thalassaemia patients. This study was carried on 266 transfusion dependant thalassemia patients, All those patients were subjected to full history taking, complete physical examination, assessment of Anthropometric measurements routine laboratory investigations. The finding of this study could be summarized as follow: Statistically significant negative correlations were found between serum ferritin and height-for-age zscores and weight for-age z scores, but no statistically significant correlations were found between anthropometric indicators and other laboratory data of the studied B- thalassemic patients.
