Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of rhythmic auditory stimulation on motor proficiency in children with autism. Methods: A total of 30 autistic children aged 8{u2013}10 years with mild to moderate autistic features participated in this study. They were randomly allocated to either the control group (n=15), which received a specially designed physical therapy program, or the study group (n=15), which received the same program in addition to gait training with rhythmic auditory stimulation. To provide rhythmic auditory stimulation, combination of a metronome beat set to the child{u2019}s cadence and rhythmic cueing from the musical instrument digital interface Cubase musical program was used. Both groups received 3 sessions per week for 3 successive months. The Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency 2nd Edition was used to assess the motor skills before and after 3 months of intervention including running speed and agility, bilateral coordination, balance, upper limb coordination, and strength subtests. Results: There were significant improvements in all measured variables both groups after treatment. Moreover, comparing the post-treatment results of the two groups revealed significant improvement in favor of the study group. Conclusion: Gait training with rhythmic auditory stimulation elicited a positive effect on motor proficiency of children with autism
