Abstract

Microparticles (MPs) are defined as membrane-derived vesicles smaller than 1micron that are shed from any cell type in response to cell stress or apoptosis with possible biological activities. During blood storage, RBCs are exposed to changes termed {u2018}storage lesion{u2019} including RBC shape modification and MPs production as well as oxidative injury to lipids and proteins. We studied the impact of storage on RBCs by quantitation of red cell microparticles and their potential procoagulant activity via functional assay. In addition, we studied the antioxidant effect of ascorbic acid as proposed additive to improve stored RBCs quality. We concluded that MPs increase on storage with increased procoagulant activity. Ascorbic acid reduced the MPs production which can be possible additive for further research in future
