Abstract Purpose: to study the effect of Nd: YAG laser posterior capsulotomy on refraction, BCVA in pseudophakic eyes. Methods: a retrospective study that included 110 eyes (of 100 patients) with posterior capsular opacification after uncomplicated phacoemulsification surgery and intraocular lens implantation. Complete ocular examinations were performed for all patients before and after YAG capsulotomy. The best corrected visual acuity, sphere and cylinder were obtained before capsulotomy and one month after capsulotomy and changes were investigated. Data was analyzed statistically. Results: The mean age for these patients at the time of the procedure was 61.35 years ± 14.46 (SD). The mean refractive sphere changes towards a myopic shift changing from 0.04 ±1.78 (SD) before capsulotomy to be -0.40 ±1.43 (SD) after capsulotomy. The mean refractive cylinder was -1.67±1.45 (SD) before capsulotomy and changed into -1.42 ±1.16 (SD) after capsulotomy, making a mild hyperopic shift, there were no statistical significance of any change in axis of the cylinder. There was a significant improvement in BCVA (Iog MAR) where the mean BCVA before capsulotomy was 0.49±0.33 (SD) and changes into 0.23±0.22 (SD) after capsulotomy |
