Abstract

Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the role of diagnostic hysteroscopy in women with unexplained infertility. Patients and methods: Women with unexplained infertility were included in this cross sectional study, evaluated with transvaginal ultrasound and diagnostic office hysteroscopy. Diagnostic hysteroscopy was performed between the 7th and 11th day of the cycle. The criteria for hysteroscopic findings were based on the cervical canal, uterine cavity, and endometrium, visualization of the tubal ostia and lesions of the utero-tubal junction. Hysteroscopic findings were categorized as either being normal or showing congenital or acquired uterine abnormalities. Results: One hundred women with unexplained infertility were included. All patients are evaluated with transvaginal ultrasound and underwent diagnostic hysteroscopy. Based on hysteroscopic findings, that majority of cases show normal hysteroscopy (77%), versus 4% show subseptate uterus, 3% show arcuate uterus, 3% show endometrial polyp, and 3% show submucous fibroid, 2% had intramural fibroid, 2% Intrauterine adhesions,4% Cervical stenosis, and 1% had Cervical polyp, and Cervical adhesions. Conclusions: Routine diagnostic hysteroscopy should be used as a basic part of the work-up for women with unexplained infertility
