Abstract

Background: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease and the primary diagnosis in more than 40% of new patients on dialysis in several parts of the world including the United States.Identifying the factors that contribute to the pathogenesis of DN is a critical step towards halting its progression. Aim: The current case-control study aimed at correlating between Urinary Connective Tissue Growth Factor excretion and clinical markers of renal disease in Type 2 Diabetic Patients with diabetic nephropathy.Subjects and Methods: The study included 75 patients with T2DM different grades of proteinuria and 20 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects as controls.Thorough clinical evaluation was done. Laboratory investigation included; HbA1c, serum creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), urine albumin to creatinine ratio (U.ACR), and UCTGF. Results: U.CTGF levels showed significant relation to UACR(P<0.001). In T2DM patients, U.CTGF showed significant positive correlation with UACR (r = 0.731, P < 0.001), HA1c (r = 0.230, P = 0.038), but negative correlation with eGFR (r = - 0.421, P <0.001). Conclusion: There issignificant association of U.CTGF with U.ACR and other clinical markers of renal disease in patients with T2DM
