Abstract

Background: Tinnitus is a phantom perception of sound without an external source. It causes various emotional reactions that may affect the quality of life in different manners. Central auditory processing performance depends on accurate and precise neuronal firing with a balance between the excitatory and inhibitory synapses, which might be compromised in tinnitus patients. Objective: To determine central auditory processing deficits (temporal processing and auditory memory) in patients with tinnitus and to correlate between the severity of tinnitus and the associated central auditory processing disorder. Subjects and methods: Thirty adult individuals with tinnitus were included as the study group and 30 age-matched individuals as the control group. All subjects were submitted to full history taking, basic audiological evaluation, behavioral central auditory tests; speech in noise Test (SPIN), duration pattern tests and pitch pattern sequence (DPT and PPST), the dichotic digits test (DDT), auditory fusion test (AFT) and memory Tests. The study group was submitted to pitch matching (PMF), loudness matching (TLM) and tinnitus handicap inventory questionnaire (THI)
