Abstract

Objective: This study was carried out using pomegranate peel (Punic granatum L.) and tomato peel (Lycopersicon esculentum) as it contains fiber and antioxidant. The present study investigated the effects of pomegranate peel (Punic granatum L.) and tomato peel (Lycopersicon esculentum) on the blood lipids and glucose level and organs weight in hypercholesterolemic rat. Design: Rats were divided into 9 groups all group contains 5 rats, first group negative control, second group hypercholesterolemic, third group fed on pan bread without additives, fourth, fifth, sixth group fed on several diets (5%, 7.5%, 10%) of pan bread with pomegranate peel or tomato peel for 45 days. Body weight was taken until end experiment. Fasting blood sample were taken every two weeks, serum cholesterol, serum triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and VLDL- cholesterol. The liver, heart, pancrease, spleen and kidney of all animals were carefully removed and token organs weight. Results: Treatment using pomegranate peel (Punic granatum L.) and tomato peel (Lycopersicon esculentum) reduced significantly of glucose and lipid level in experimental rats in all groups fed on different levels of pomegranate peel and tomato peel. The results showed a gradual decrease in glucose and lipid as the level of supplement increased
