Abstract Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a common neurosurgical condition that occurs after minor head trauma. Epilepsy is a classical complication of CSDH. This study was prospectively performed to determine the value of prophylactic antiepileptic drugs (AEDS) in prevention of early seizures after evacuation of CSDH. 82 patients were divided into 2 groups: group A (41 patients received prophylactic antiepileptic drugs for 1week) and group B (41 patients without prophylactic antiepileptic drugs). Fits occurred only among group B {u2248} (7%) of the 41 patients and in none of those who received prophylactic antiepileptic drugs. Statistically, the difference between the 2 groups regarding the incidence of fits was insignificant with Probability value {u02C3}0.873. Therefore; we recommend that prophylactic antiepileptic drugs should not be administered routinely in all patients operated upon for evacuation of CSDH |
