Abstract

Four models with overdenture supported by two implants placed in the inter-foraminal region were constructed using Solidworks software. In each model only one implant material was used, therefore a titanium model, carbon re-inforced PEEK, ceramic filled PEEK and unfilled PEEK model were obtained. All variables rather than implant material were standardized for all the models. The material properties for compact bone, cancellous bone, mucosa, acrylic, titanium alloy, carbon re-inforced PEEK, ceramic filled PEEK and unfilled PEEK were identified. Each model was subjected to two types of load applied separately in two different times. One load was unilateral vertical load applied to the central fossae of the premolars and the first molar acrylic teeth. The other one was oblique load applied to the lingual incline of the buccal cusps of the posterior teeth. The model was restrained at its inferior border to avoid total body displacement.Using ANSYS mechanical software, the models were meshed with adaptive coarse mesh and analysis was conducted with iterative method. The stresses at the mesial, distal, buccal, lingual, middle and apical bone parts around each implant were recorded. The stresses in the implants were also calculated. The results were collected, and comparison was made. The results showed that titanium implant model induced the least amount of von Misses stresses in the coronal portion of the peri-implant bone and the highest amount of stresses within the apical and middle parts while the opposite occurred with the PEEK implant models
