Abstract

The management of patients with Adhesive Small Bowel Obstruction (ASBO) is controversial because surgery can induce new adhesions, whereas conservative treatment does not remove the cause of the obstruction. A patient{u2019}s suitability for conservative versus surgical management needs to be determined. This decision is often the greatest challenge in managing ASBO. According to many authors, there are many trials to find out predictive variables related to the failure of non-operative management (NOM) and need for surgical intervention in ASBO. However, despite these attempts to identify practical predicting factors, it still poses a critical challenge for surgeons to determine whether the ASBO patient needs early surgical intervention thus avoiding the morbidity of a mandatory late surgery. The purpose of this study is to compare between the two groups (Responders and Non-responders) regarding their clinical, laboratory and radiological findings in order to find out the predictive factors that might be in favor of operative management in those who have no clear indication for immediate surgery such as peritonitis and are more likely to benefit from conservative approach without adding a risk of a delayed intervention with its consequence
