The prevalence and the outcome of cardiomyopathies in the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit

Abstract
Cardiomyopathies refer to structural and/or functional abnormalities of the myocardium where other known causes of myocardial dysfunction such as systemic hypertension, valvular disease and ischemic heart disease have been excluded. Pediatric cardiomyopathies are rare but serious and often life-threatening conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and the outcome of patients diagnosed with cardiomyopathies and admitted to the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU) in Cairo University Specialized Children Hospital.This retrospective descriptive study enrolled ninety two patients with cardiomyopathy in PCICU in Cairo University Specialized Children Hospital from January 2011 to September 2017. Patients with cardiomyopathies represented 8.6% (92/1071) of all cases with cardiac diseases who admitted in the PCICU in the same period of study according to the target age group (0.5 to 12 years). Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) was the most frequent type among the admitted patients (80 cases), while 6 cases diagnosed as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), 4 cases as restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) and only 2 cases with mixed DCM-RCM. Management is mainly for heart failure especially in cases of DCM and symptomatic treatment in HCM cases (mainly by Ý-blockers).First diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and Ý-blockers were used
