Abstract

Fish have been widely documented as useful bioindicator for ecotoxicological studies because of their different response to pollution. Thus, the present study was carried out to determine first the LC50 of two commercial herbicides Thiobencarb and Atrazine and second their sublethal effects on the African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Females were exposed to sublethal concentration of Thiobencarb ({u00BD} LC50 7.0 ppm) and Atrazine ({u00BD} LC50 6.5 ppm) for 3, 9 and 15 days. Severe abnormalities appeared as nervous manifestations, erosion of fins and tail and eye opacity. Postmortem lesions included internal hemorrhage, dark congested liver and unsymmetrical lobes of ovary with hemorrhages. Both herbicides exerted highly significant decrease among relative(F.B.L. , F.B.W. and FOW) and absolute fecundity (T. Ripen Eggs). Also, both herbicides showed significant DROP in biochemical parameters as Total protein, liver enzymes (ALT and AST) Glucose (stress indicator) and sex hormones (Testosterone and Estradiol)
