Abstract
Background: In the few last decades, there is a rapid increase in numbers of elderly people, relatively and absolutely, in Egypt and worldwide, due to demographic shift. Consequently, numbers of elderly with psychiatric disorders are expected to be increased. Epidemiological data concerning prevalence of psychiatric disorders among elderly are required for proper health planning. Aim of the study: To explore magnitude, patterns, and possible associated risk factors of the broad spectrum of psychiatric disorders among a sample of community-dwelling elderly individuals. Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study included 100 community-dwelling elderly, aged 60 years and above, who attended at two geriatric clubs located in Zagazig city, Sharkiya governorate. MMSE was used for exclusion of subjects with severe cognitive impairment i.e: subjects scored <10 had been excluded. GHQ-28 was applied for all included subjects to screen for subjects with possible psychiatric disorders. SCID-I was used to interview only subjects who have yielded +ve result in GHQ-28. Again; for all included subjects, MoCA-B was applied to detect MCI or dementia, El-Gilany socioeconomic scale was applied for assessment of socio-economic status and a designed questionnaire was applied to gather demographic data and to assess general medical condition
