Abstract

In survey of fungi from raw peanut by washing technique, nine fungal species were isolated. The toxigenic Aspergillus flavus was the most frequent species in the isolation plates. Molecular identification using NCBI GenBank, confirm that it is identical to A. flavus species in GenBank with similarity of 100%. The aflatoxins (AFs) produced in fermentation medium of A. flavus was extracted and estimated by HPLC. Banana peel powder was also prepared from samples collected from juice markets. In vitro study revealed that banana peel has high adsorption capacity to aflatoxins in concentration depending manner of either peel or aflatoxins. In vivo study using 78 albino rats divided into 13 groups (G1-G13) revealed that high and low aflatoxins concentrations (G3&G4) significantly increase the blood parameters AST, ALT, ALP, creatinine, urea, cholesterol and triglyceride, meanwhile, protein and albumin were decreased which indicated liver and kidney injury. In blood picture AFs also decreased the RBCs, Hb, PCV, MCV, MCHC, MCH and platelets, while increased the total leucocyte count (TLC). Body weights, liver and kidney weights, were also increased by aflatoxins treatment. Single treatments of albino rats with banana peel at three levels (G5, G5 and G7) have generally no significant changes in all these parameters. Combination treatments of albino rats with banana peel and aflatoxins (G8-G13) led to partial elimination of the harmful effect of AFs treated singly as all parameters have almost normal level compared to control values (G1&G2)
