Abstract

Urinary bladder cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed neoplasms, with an estimated 429,800 new cases and 165,100 deaths in 2012 worldwide. Aim of the work: Was to evaluate the expression of estrogen receptor Ý in the urothelial carcinoma of the bladder and its correlation with prognostic indices of the tumor. Material and methods: We retrospectively reviewed the data of 50 archived, formalin fixed, paraffin embedded tissue blocks of urothelial cell carcinoma of the bladder and evaluated for age, sex of patient, grade of tumor, site and size of tumor, presence of lymph node metastasis and tumor staging (invasion). Immunohistochemical reactions were carried out by using rabbit antihuman estrogen receptor beta antibody, diluted to 1:100, manufactured by (Gene Tex, USA) on all studied cases. Results: Twenty one (42%) cases showed positive ER Ý expression, with statistically significant correlations between ER Ý and histological grade, Bilharziasis, lymph node metastasis, perineural invasion and perivesical fat invasion. Conclusion: The statistically significant relationship between ER expression in bladder urothelial carcinoma and the grade of tumor and lymph node metastasis suggests that ER may play a role in the initiation and progression of urothelial carcinoma of the urinary bladder
