Abstract

Purposes: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging has been used over the last years for various dental fields. However, it has high dose of radiation compared to conventional imaging modalities. Accordingly, this study set out to assess the effect of decreasing radiation dose delivered to the patient using ultra-low dose CBCT protocol on linear measurements accuracy. Materials and Methods: Ten dry human skulls were included in the study, 27 anatomical landmarks were marked on each skull. Twenty two linear measurements were conducted between the marked points using digital caliper. Gutta-percha cone were cut and glued over the marked anatomical landmarks. The skulls were then imaged using ultra-low dose CBCT protocol operated at 90 kVp, 7.1 mA, and 4.5 sec. The same 22 linear measurements were conducted on CBCT orthogonal images, and were repeated for intra-observer reliability after 2 weeks. Results: Dahelberg error (DE) and Relative Dahelberg Error (RDE) were used for the assessment and agreement between all measurements. And the results revealed that there was no statistically significant difference in the linear measurements conducted using ultra-low dose CBCT when compared to direct skull linear measurements with mean Dahelberg Error value of 0.71 mm, and excellent inter and intra observer reliability. Conclusion: The results of this study supported the idea that ultra-low dose CBCT protocol can be used for accurate craniofacial linear measurements
