Abstract
This thesis provides an empirical analysis for Egypt{u2019}s natural gas demand during the period from 1983 to 2015. First, this study applies the decomposition analysis in order to quantify the factors affecting the changes in gas consumption in Egypt. This analysis shows that the changes in Egypt{u2019}s gas consumption were mainly caused by the changes in the economic activity of the gas consuming sectors. Second, this study applies the Econometric analysis to estimate the long and short run elasticities of the gas demand in Egypt. Overall, the results show the study has found that, on one hand, the long run income and price elasticities, in absolute values, are greater than their counterparts in the short run. The explanation is that consumers can modify their consumption habits and plans in the long run as a response to changes in the income or the price. On the other hand, natural gas demand has been found to be more responsive to changes in income than changes in price in both the short and the long run. Afterwards, the study examines the causality relationship between the gas consumption and economic growth for the gas consuming sectors
