Abstract

Purpose: To prospectively evaluate the ability of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) to determine the T stage of bladder carcinoma and to measure the correlation between the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and histological grade (G1, G2 and G3). Materials and Methods: Between September 2016 and January 2018, 40 consecutive patients with suspected bladder cancer, underwent MR imaging. The 40 patients underwent transurethral cystoscopic biopsy after MR imaging. The tumor was histolo-pathologically confirmed and staged in 36 patients (age range, 17{u2013}79 years; mean, 61 years) with 42 lesions. Different image sets (i.e. T1WIs plus T2WIs, T2WIs alone and T2WIs plus DWIs) were interpreted. ADCs values of the tumors were calculated. Results: Regarding the detection of urinary bladder carcinoma, DW-MRI showed overall sensitivity of 60%, specificity of 90%, PPV of 94.7%, NPV of 42.9 % and accuracy of 67.5%. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for differentiating superficial from invasive tumors using T2WIs alone and combined use of T2WIs and DWIs were exactly the same 35.3%, 100%, and 72.5% respectively
