Abstract

Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease, with mechanisms that remain to be elucidated. Previous studies proposed that genes and environments are required for systemic lupus to develop and flare. It has been found that epigenetics have a significant influence on SLE. Aim or the Work: The aim of our study is to investigate serum levels of MALAT1 and GAS5 in Egyptian patients with SLE and to evaluate their relationship to disease activity. Methodology: The present study was a case-control study that was carried out from November 2017 to August 2018 in the Medical Biochemistry Department, Cairo University. The study included 39 patients who were diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and 46 age and sex-matched healthy controls. A written informed consent was obtained from every eligible patient. Patients were informed about the study objectives, methodology, risk, and benefit. The study{u2019}s protocol was reviewed and approved by IRB, ethics committee or audit department of Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University. All patients were subjected to full history taking, clinical examination and laboratory analysis for the two lncRNAs; MALAT-1 and GAS-5
