Abstract Background: Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder. Diagnosis is based on clinical examination, electroencephalogram (EEG), and neuroimaging. A suitable biomarker for epilepsy diagnosis is under research .MicroRNAs are non-coding RNA related to epileptogenesis and dysregulated in epileptic patients, their potential use as a biomarker of epilepsy is still under research. Aim of the work: to investigate the expression level of miR 106b,146a and 194-5p in epileptic patients compared to control subjects in correlation to clinical characteristics. Methodology The expression of three epilepsy-associated miRNAs (miR-106b, miR-146a,and miR-194-5p) was measured by quantitative RT-PCR, using SYBR Green master Mix fluorescence with Specific primers in the serum of 30 epilepsy patients divided into 2 subgroups (idiopathic generalized and idiopathic focal epilepsies) and 20 control populations. Results: Serum miR-106b, miR194-5p were significantly increased in generalized epilepsy patients compared with control, miR 194-5P was significantly down regulated in focal epilepsy group. In addition, serum miR 194 -5p was significantly correlated to disease duration in group 1, the three microRNA were significantly correlated to each other |
