Abstract

Inhaled furosemide had been recently used as an adjuvant therapy in cases suffering from wheezy chest. Objective: We aimed to determine the effect of adjuvant therapy with nebulized frusemide in critically ill infants and children with wheezy chest, in comparison to cases who received standard treatment, as regard improvement in respiratory effort. Methods: A randomized controlled trial comprised 150 patients suffering from wheezy chest divided into 2 groups. In addition to bronchodilators and systemic steroids (given alone to group B), furosemide was given by inhalation in group A. Clinical status was determined by assessment of blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate and clinical asthma score (CAS), and investigations in the form of blood gases, CBC, CRP, electrolytes, renal and liver functions, just before and at 8 and 24 hours after receiving treatment in 2 groups
