Abstract

Purpose: Correlation between macular perfusion and ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) using optical coherence tomography angiography. (OCTA) Design: Prospective observational study Methods: 51 eyes from the 28 patients were imaged by using RTVue XR Avanti (AngioVue; optovue® Inc.) to assess the vascular density (VD) in the superficial and deep vascular complexes, and using the spectral domain OCT Macula to assess the GCC thickness. They were divided into three groups according to severity by visual field mean deviation (VF MD) to mild, moderate and severe. Results: The VD measurements in the superficial vascular complex (SVC), were 46.0 ± 5.8, 45.8 ± 4.4, 36.0 ± 6.6 in 2mild3, 2moderate3 , and 2severe3 groups respectively, while in the deep vascular complex (DVC), the VD measurements were 49.8 ± 8.0, 47.0 ± 7.4, 40.4 ± 9.4 in the three groups respectively. The differences in the VD between 2moderate3 and 2severe3 groups were larger and more significant in the SVC (the mean difference was 9.8% in the whole image and 10.9% in the perifoveal area, P<0.001) compared to the DVC (mean difference of 6.6% in the whole image and 7.6% in the perifoveal area). Also on comparing the 3 groups by ANOVA test, the differences in the VD in the SVC were highly significant (P < 0.001) especially in the whole image and the perifoveal area. The correlation between the GCC thickness and the VD was statistically significant in the SVC only in the whole image and the perifoveal area (P < 0.001). No significant correlation with GCC was detected in the parafoveal area in the superficial plexus or in the deep vascular complex
