Abstract

Introduction: Body-contouring surgery will continue to increase in popularity as patients lose weight. Once patients have lost an extreme amount of weight, they are left with redundant skin that does not contract back to its pre-weight-gain tightness. Sharing evidence-based knowledge with patients is an important factor for creating reasonable expectations in body contouring surgery outcomes. Aim 0f the work: The aim of this study is to evaluate collagen and elastin changes in skin of patients (with no weight loss and with weight loss) undergoing body contouring surgery and patients (with morbid obesity) undergoing bariatric surgery. Methods: This study was performed on 30 female patients from whom skin biopsies were taken from the skin excised during operations, these skin biopsies were examined histologically. The patients were divided into 3 equal groups. The first included 10 patients with history of no weight loss who underwent cosmetic contouring procedures. The second included 10 patients with morbid obesity, which underwent bariatric surgery. The third included 10 patients with history of massive weight loss submitted to cosmetic contouring procedures
