Abstract

The present study aimed to survey some of the ecto and endoparasites infecting selected commercial fish in Egypt. 176 fish specimens representing four different species of four families were collected during the period from January 2015 to February 2016 from Rokn Farouk along the River Nile, Helwan, Egypt. Five different species of monogenean parasites were recovered during the current study which were Cichlidogyrus aegypticus, Cichlidogyrus tilapiae, Gyrodactylus cichlidarum, Protoancylodiscoides malapteruri and Quadriacanthus bagrae. Five different species of digenean parasites were recovered during study which were metacercaria of Euclinostomum heterostomum, metacercaria ofClinostomum complanatum, adults of Orientocreadium batrachoides, Glossidium pedatum and Acanthostomum spiniceps. In addition, two different species of nematode parasites contracaecum sp. and Anisakis simplex were recovered as larvae. Also water quality parameters as well as heavy metals concentrations either in water, sediment or in fish organs were measured seasonally. The results showed that the parasites have ability to accumulate heavy metals in their tissues more than the existing quantities in their hosts which mean that the parasites represent good bioindicators of water pollution. The results showed that the lowest percentage of bioaccumulation of these metals was in the muscles of fish. Also, the effect of different cooking methods of fish on the level of heavy metals in their tissues was detected. It was found that the concentrations of the elements (Cadmium, Copper, Iron and Lead) were low in grilled fish followed by fried fish, while the uncooked fish contained the highest metal concentrations
