Abstract Background: Idiopathic Interstitial Pneumonias (IIPs) are interstitial lung diseases of unknown etiology that have similar clinical and radiological features and are distinguished primarily by the histological pattern on lung biopsy. They are classified into histological subtypes and all are characterized by varying degree of inflammation and fibrosis. IIP is associated with several co-morbidities; cognitive dysfunction is considered an important clinical co-morbidity which is associated with impaired lung function. Besides, chronic hypoxia is found to be significantly associated with cognitive dysfunction. Since evidence has shown that TGF-Ý₁ is an inflammatory cytokine that is involved in the mechanism of fibrosis. TGF-Ý₁ has become a subject of clinical research in recent years. Aim of the work: To asses cognitive function in cases of Major IIPs and to correlate between cognitive dysfunction and both serum level of transforming growth factor beta 1 as a predictor of inflammatory response, and oxygenation parameters. Method: The study included 50 individuals, and was divided into 2 groups, patients’ group included 30 individuals, and healthy control group included 20 individuals. The patients’ group was subjected to thorough history taking, clinical examination, arterial blood gas measurement, spirometry, six minute walk distance and high resolution computed tomography of chest. Besides, both patients’ and control groups were subjected to measurements of serum level of TGF-Ý₁ , and assessment of cognitive function by WAIS and MMSE test |
