Abstract

Backgroud: Globally Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is the third most common cancer in the world. There is an urgent need to identify predictive markers for CRC progression and treatment. Aim: This study aimed to assess immunohistochemical expression of MGMT in CRC and correlation of this expression with the clinico-pathological aspects of the tumor, carried on 70 colectomy using formalin fixed paraffin embedded tumor tissue. Results: MGMT expression status was significantly correlated with tumor stage and metastatic status (p-value 0.0146 and 0.0392 respectively), and showed a statistically nonsignificant direct linear correlation with primary tumor (T) invasiveness, while it was not correlated with age, sex, size, site, histologic grade , type , nodal status ,vascular or perineural invasion (p- value > 0.05). Conclusions: Our results are favoring that MGMT expression can be correlated with CRC progression and might be a valuable biomarker in selection of metastatic and recurrent cases to benefit from alkylating chemotherapeutics as ,Temozolomide
