Abstract

The aim of the present randomized clinical trial was to evaluate postoperative pain, evaluate bacterial reduction from the root canals and to assess the intensity of bacteremia after mechanical preparation and irrigation using the 3 types of irrigation protocols (MTAD, NaOCl, saline) A total of 60 medically free patients of both sexes with necrotic single canals were selected for this study The patients were randomly assigned into 3 different groups (20 each) group I: MTAD irrigation protocol group II: NaOCl irrigation protocol group III: Saline irrigation {u2022}Before any manipulation, 20 ml of blood was taken from the patient. A 10 ml aerobe culture and 10 ml anaerobe culture using Bactec blood culture bottles and BactecPlus Anaerobic/F were used for aerobic and anaerobic cultures respectively. This step was made to confirm that there was no other source of bacteremia other than the root canal treatment. {u2022}Subjects were treated in 1 session with completed mechanical preparation with ProTaper rotary files up to size F3 and irrigation was performed using the 3 different irrigation protocols used in this study. {u2022}The first root canal sampling (S1) was carried out with sterile paper points # 15 that were placed in the canals about 1 mm short of the radiographic apex to absorb the fluid in the canal. Each paper point remained in the canal for at least 1 minute
