Abstract
Breast cancer is the most frequent malignancy in women. It is defined as a complex heterogeneous and multifactorial disease. The aim of the present study was to assess the nutritional status of women with breast cancer under chemotherapy. This study was carried out on a total sample of 57 patients receiving chemotherapy treatment. A total number of 27 patients were selected from hospitals in Cairo, represented as urban patients, and a number of 30 were selected from Al-Gharbia Governorate, represented as rural patients. Their age ranged 40-50 years. Data Collected by interviewing patients. The nutritional status was evaluated using questionnaires which are: 24 hours’ recall, diet history, food frequency questionnaire, and subjective global assessment questionnaire. Clinical assessment was evaluated by laboratory investigations. The results revealed that urban patient’s BMI was lower than BMI of rural ones. Results of socioeconomics level revealed that urban patients had 75% of total score which is significantly higher than the patients’ who live in rural area; they had 59% of total score. The mean value of hemoglobin, and total leukocyte count (TLC) concentration in the blood are within the normal range. Data
revealed that total patient’s sample were assessed by Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) were nutritionally at risk. Results illustrated that patients from urban area had lower percentage in total caloric intake (55%) compared to the patients from rural area (76%). Results showed that all tested patients had deficiency in the intake of protein, fiber, vitamin (A, C), calcium and iron compared with RDA level. In conclusion all samples had lower actual intake than the RDA, Except for fats intake and vitamin B1 by urban patients (101%, and 305%, respectively) and phosphorus intake by rural ones (104%). It is recommended that following the appropriate dietary patterns and encouraging a nutrition education program will lead to improvement in chemotherapy treatment outcomes and improve overall health status.
