Abstract

Background: Gastrointestinal endoscopy is an invasive procedure associated with high level of anxiety and stress which increase pain intensity. Aim: Determine the efficacy of nursing intervention on anxiety and pain among hepatic patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy. Methods: Three tools were used,structured interview questionnaire to assess knowledge, demographic and health relevant data of patients, Beck Anxiety Inventory scale, numerical and visual analog scale for measuring pain post operatively. Results: There was an improvement with high significant differences in knowledge, anxiety and pain in study group compared to their control post intervention (P<0.001).Conclusion: The study concluded that educational nursing intervention was an effective method to improve knowledge, anxiety and pain of the patients subjected to gastroscopy. Recommendation: Incorporate educational intervention to routine care for all patients undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy.
