Abstract

This study was double blinded randomized clinical trial which was prospectively conducted on 88 fullterm neonates with neonatal physiological jaundice admitted to neonatal intensive care units of Menoufia university hospital and Damanhour teaching hospital in the period from January 2022 to April 2022. Infants were allocated into two groups: Probiotic group included 44 fullterm neonates with physiological jaundice who were given the probiotics and Placebo group included 44 neonates who were given the placebo. Both groups received standard conventional phototherapy, but the probiotic group received sachet of probiotic diluted in baby`s milk once daily until hospital discharge. The outcome variables were serum bilirubin level and the duration of phototherapy. Placebo was administred to the placebo group with 10 ml instilled water added to baby feeding.
We aimed at this work to understand the effect of probiotics on neonatal physiological jaundice.
Results of the current stud can be summarized as follows:
 There was no statistically significant difference found between 2 groups regarding sex, age by (days), sex, birth weight (kg), gestational age (weeks), mode of delivery, hemoglobin, platelets and white blood cells count, neutrophils, lymphocytes and CRP.
 Regarding duration of admission, there was statistically significant decrease in duration of admission in the group received prebiotics (2.82 ± 0.62) days than the group who received placebo (4.23 ± 0.99) days.
 There were highly significant difference between TSB at admission and tsb on 2nd, 3rd, 4th day and at discharge in probiotic group, and there were highly statistically significant difference between TSB at admission and 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th day in placebo group.
 There were no statistically significant difference between 2 groups regarding TSB at admission and at discharge.
 There were statistically significant decrease in probiotic group regarding TSB at 2nd, 3rd, 4th day than in placebo group.
 Seven cases were A+, 5 were A-, 14 were B+, 7 were A-, 6 cases were AB+, and 5 cases were AB-. Concerning coomb’s test, all cases were negative. There was no statistically significant between the groups regarding blood group and coomb’s test.
