Abstract

Background: A new reality is obligated that employees’ perceptions about safety are important because organizations with strong safety culture consistently report fewer workplace injuries and harmful events. Aim: assess nurses ’perceptions of patient safety standards and sources of patients’ risks and to assess the level of nurses{u2018} practice of patient safety standards at the selected MOH hospital. Research Design: A descriptive correlational design was utilized. Setting: The study was conducted in one of MOH hospitals at Cairo in Egypt. Subjects: A convenient sample of (100) nurses. Data Collection Tools: Two tools, first safety perception questionnaire, second: {u2015}Nurses Safety Practice Observational checklist{u2016}. Results The highest mean percent of nurses perception of patient safety standards, (15.22%) was noticed in occupational safety procedures, the lowest mean percent of nurses perception of patient safety standards (3.22%) was noticed in training and skills, the highest mean percent of nurses (23.14%) was applying patient safety standards as in ”safety of high-risk medication and the lowest percentage of nurses (8.82 %) was applying patient safety standards as in ”reduce infection rate”. Conclusion: There was a positive correlation between perception of nurses and their practices regarding patient safety standards. Recommendations: The current study recommended development of patient safety committee by hospital administration , effective supervision for nursing staff is essential for guidance, monitoring and evaluating nurses practice of patient safety standards, nurses of Ministry of Health hospital in need of massive continuous education and increase awareness about patient safety standards knowledge and practice and conduct further studies to assess the staff practice of patient safety standards through evaluation the recommended system
