Abstract

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of attachment retained obturator versus clasp retained obturator on the patients satisfaction and the supporting structures in the treatment of unilateral maxillectomy . Fourteen patients (eight females and six males) were selected from the Outpatient Clinic, Prosthodontics Department , Maxillofacial Prosthodontics Unit, Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine Cairo University or referred from The National Cancer Institute. All patients were with unilateral maxillectomy . Patients were divided randomly into two equal groups each of seven patients (four females and three males) where each patient received an obturator as follows: Patients of the first group received attachment retained obturators. Patients of the second group received clasp retained obturators. Quality of life evaluation (patient satisfaction) was recorded at one month of prosthesis insertion , after three and nine months later by using two scales a) Obturator Functioning Scale b)The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Head and Neck 35 (cancer-specific module) It was shown that the patient satisfaction scale was statistically significantly higher in clasp retained obturator group compared to attachment retained obturatori.e(the patient of attachment group were more satisfied than the clasp group) Radiographic changes were recorded at the time of prosthesis insertion , after three six, nine months later for marginal bone height and density changes around the anterior and posterior abutments. It was shown that the changes in the marginal bone height measurements after nine months of prosthesis insertion were statistically significantly higher in the clasp group compared to the attachment . And also, the changes in bone density measurements were statistically significantly higher in the attachment group compared to the clasp between both groups along the study period
