Abstract Objective: To detect possible changes in renal blood flow velocity and vascular indices by duplex ultrasonography and to correlate these changes with clinical and laboratory parameters results in children and adolescents with Type I Diabetes Mellitus. Design: Case control study. Subjects: 25 Type I diabetic children and 25 control subjects assessed once. Methods: Renal Duplex examination was done for diabetic patients and control subjects. The Doppler indices of main renal artery (MRA), segmental (SA) and interlobar (ILA) were assessed as well as routine renal ultrasound examination. Results: Statistically significant differences were detected between diabetic and control cases regarding resistive index (RI) of main renal artery (MRA), segmental (SA) and interlobar (ILA). The results were compared to serum creatinine, albumin/creatinine ratio and glycated hemoglobin. Conclusion: Our study showed some differences in the resistive index (RI) of main renal, segmental and interlobar arteries between children with type I diabetes than age matched healthy controls and there was a significant positive correlation between them and duration of diabetes, Albumin/Creatinine ratio mg/mmol and serum creatinine level (mg/dl) |
