Abstract

This research aims in developing numerical techniques that help in the detection of buried objects near the surface of the earth. The core of the study depends on observations on the frequency profile of the reflection coefficient from a plane wave incident normally on the surface of the earth. The research covered two basic models. The first model assumed that the region under the earth{u2019}s surface consists of stratified semi-infinite cascaded layers of different properties. The study of this model can lead to the detection of underground water or dielectric rocky slabs. It can also be used in calculating the physical properties of soil. In the second model, the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method is used to investigate the reflection from a finite object, namely conducting sphere, buried near the surface of the earth. The time domain profile of the reflected field can indicate the presence of the object and also leads to the determination of its depth
