Abstract

The present study involves the preparation of magnetic iron nano-particles (Fe₃O₄) and the composite of magnetic iron nano-particles (Fe₃O₄) capped with Cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). This study aims to the use of the newly prepared materials for removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous media. The magnetic nano-particles (NPs) were prepared by co-precipitation method. The structure of the prepared systems was confirmed by using XRD, FTIR and TEM. Factors affecting the efficiency of Cr(VI) removal from the aqueous media were studied such as pH, contact time, dosage level of composite and competing ions. All tests were performed by using 100 mg/L Cr(VI). The results indicated that, in a basic media (pH = 9.0), and a level of 12 mg/ml of iron nano-particles or composite with contact time for 12 hours, the efficiency of removal of Cr(VI) is low, 37.88% and 53.03%, respectively. In case of acidic media (pH=4.0) and under the same cited conditions the efficiency of removal was increased to 74.50% and 95.77%, respectively. This indicated the high efficiency of the composite for removal of Cr(VI). The effect of competitive anions such as SO₄²₋, NO₂⁻and PO₄³⁻on the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) using Fe₃O₄/CTAB composite was studied. The results indicated that, presence of such interfering ions at a level of 5:1 Cr(VI):interfering ion had a negligible effect on the removal efficiency. The present model was applied for real wastewater sample collected from tanneries facility, Fom El-Khaleg, Cairo Governorate, Egypt. The results showed high efficiency in removal of Cr(VI), 94.64%. This means the present method is reliable and easy to be applied for removal of chromium (VI) from industrial wastewater using the synthesized Fe₃O₄/CTAB composite
