Abstract

The three-way ANOVA showed that adhesive system, dentin substrate, storage media and the interaction between the three variables were statistically significant. Results revealed that there was no statistically significant difference between AdperScotchbond Multipurpose and Clearfil SE Bond adhesive systems. ScotchbondUniversal Adhesive system showed statistically significant lower micro-shear bond strength compared to the other two adhesives. Regarding the effect of dentin substrate, bonding to caries-affected dentin was lower than that to normal dentin for all tested groups. While for the storage conditions, Acetyl-cholinestrase enzyme significantly affect the bond strength of all tested adhesives to both normal and caries-affected dentin. Failure modes analysis by scanning electron microscope revealed that, for AdperScotchbond Multipurpose and Clearfil SE Bond adhesive systems, the most predominant modes of failure were adhesive and mixed ones, while for Scotchbond Universal Adhesive system, cohesive failure was the most predominant. Under the limitations of this study, it could be concluded that: 1.The bonding durability of the universal adhesive was comparable to the other contemporary adhesive systems tested and has potential applicability in different areas of the adhesive dentistry. 2.Caries-affected dentin is a challenging substrate for bonding. Having influenced the results in this study, it should be considered as the substrate of choice in bond strength testing of adhesive systems. 3.The tested universal adhesive system provided satisfactory bonding potential to caries-affected dentin that should be considered in new development strategies of adhesive materials
