Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this cross sectional study was to assess lung ultrasonography as an alternative to bedside radiography for the diagnosis of childhood pneumonia and its complications. Patients & methods: The study was performed on 30 children admitted during the period from May 2017 to February 2018 in the pediatric wards and pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) of Cairo University Pediatric Hospital presenting with clinical picture of pneumonia. Chest X-rays, lung US and C.T. chest were done. Results: Radiological findings demonstrated lung consolidation in 28 patients (93.3%) by CT chest, 28 patients (93.3%) by LUS and 23 patients (76.7%) by CXR. Pleural effusion was found in 18 patients (60%) by CT chest, 17 of which were detected by LUS (94.4%), while CXR detected 13 patients (72.2%) , LUS was helpful in detecting lung pleurisy (specificity 100%), while X-rays were not helpful. 100% of patients needed sedation before CT scanning as compared to non for LUS. Conclusion: Lung ultrasound is a simple and reliable tool that can be used by the clinician in the case of suspected pneumonia. It is as reliable as CXR, can be easily repeated at the patient’s bedside and carries no risk of ionizing radiation
